What is a refrigeration compressor?

A refrigeration compressor is a device that is part of the refrigeration system in various types of equipment and machines. Its main task is to compress the refrigerant, which leads to an increase in temperature and pressure. The refrigerant vapour enters the compressor from the evaporator. The refrigerant compressed in the compressor is transferred to the condenser, where it turns into a high-pressure liquid and is then pumped further into the evaporator. There, expansion takes place via a thermostatic element, during which there is a rapid drop in pressure and consequent drop in temperature. The cooled evaporator removes heat from the environment. The refrigeration compressor is essential for the entire cooling circuit to operate correctly. It works by compressing the refrigerant, which enables it to be transformed from a gaseous to a liquid phase .Depending on the application, the refrigeration compressor can vary in design and operating principles. However, regardless of this, the compressor plays a key role in the refrigeration process, enabling the refrigeration equipment to maintain the correct temperature and operate efficiently.

What transformation takes place in a refrigeration compressor ?

In the compressor, the compression process takes place to change the refrigerant's state of aggregation, increase its energy potential and also causes the refrigerant to flow through the entire system from the compressor to the condenser to the evaporator and back to the compressor. During the compressor cycle, mechanical energy is used to pressurise the gas, converting it from its gaseous to liquid form - causing a significant increase in refrigerant temperature at the same time.

What types of compressors are there?

There are several main types of refrigeration compressors on the market, which differ in the technologies used and in their performance. One of the most common types is the reciprocating compressor, which uses the movement of a piston to compress refrigerant vapours. This is by far the most economical and widespread type of compressor in small and medium capacity refrigeration equipment. Another type is the centrifugal compressor in which the refrigerant is compressed by using the rotary motion of the rotor. Rotary vortex compressors are more advanced and more efficient than reciprocating compressors, but they are also more technologically complex and therefore more expensive to produce . Another common type of compressor is the screw compressor. Here, the refrigerant flow occurs through the cooperation of two rotors with oppositely twisted fins. Screw compressors are some of the most efficient units on the market, but because of their price they are used in refrigeration equipment with higher capacities. Another type of compressor is the scroll compressor, which is used in both refrigeration and air conditioning as well as heat pumps. Semi-hermetic compressors are generally much higher-capacity units generally used in industrial refrigeration. The choice of compressor depends on the individual needs and requirements of the user, taking into account both investment and operating costs.

What elements influence compressor selection?

When selecting a compressor depending on the application, we are guided by several basic elements. We consider the application (low or high operating temperatures), the capacity required and which refrigerants the unit can handle. It is important to consider the expected temperature in the refrigeration compartment or unit or, in the case of air conditioning, the capacity of the unit to which the compressor is applied. The unit must also be correctly sized for the condenser so that the discharge pressure and suction pressure are not too high and meet the requirements.
