A refrigerant belonging to the HFO group, which is the fourth group of fluorine-based agents. They are considered as zero ODp and very low GWP and therefore the most promising substitutes for HCFCs and HFCs. Hhydrofluoroolefin differs from HFCs in that, while there are single bonds between atoms in HFCs, there is at least one double bond between carbon atoms in HFOs.
According to Directive 2006/40/EC of the European Parliament, from 1 January 2013, all newly manufactured mobile air-conditioning systems (i.e. motor vehicles) should use refrigerants with a GWP lower than 150. The refrigerant 1234yf, developed jointly by Honeywell and DuPont, appears under the trade names Opteon yf and Solstice yf
